腹痛是指胃脘以下，耻骨毛际以上的部位发生疼痛的症状，是临床上常见的胃肠系统疾病之一。其病因复杂，可分为外感和内伤两类。具体而言，外感可因感受风、寒、暑、湿、燥、火等六淫邪气，邪入脏腑经络，阻塞经脉气血，损伤脏腑，不通则痛而致；内伤可因素体禀赋不足、劳倦内伤、饮食失调、七情失节、脏腑经脉失于荣养等，不荣则痛。作者认为，虚劳腹痛属于腹痛的一种证型，以中气虚衰、水湿困脾、脾胃升降失司、肝胆抑郁为根本，外感六淫邪气或是饮食失宜、七情失调等为标，因此治疗上从健运中气着手，兼顾外邪、七情、饮食等，临床上运用小建中汤有较为满意的效果。
