In intervertebral disc degeneration (IDD), increased proinflammatory molecules secreted by human nucleus pulposus cells (HNPCs) could promote the expression of extracellular matrix (ECM)-degrading enzymes. IDD could be affected by both genetic and environmental factors, including microRNAs (miRNAs).
